Marketing Example: Scheunenherberge

The next station of our excursion was another innovative example to attract tourists: the rural hostel called “Scheunenherberge“ in Neu-Lübbenau, just recently inaugurated.

A huge agricultural cooperative with 14 employees decided in 2003 to transform a former stable building into a simple hostel, where mainly biking tourists have the choice of a cheap overnight, sleeping on real straw. For 25 EUR per person, including breakfast, bikers get the chance to get in contact with nature and agricultural production.

Although the size of the farm does not allow for a typical “holiday on a farm“, groups as well as school classes can also book a guided tour visiting the different agricultural activities. The concept stands for the attempt to diversify farming and create new job opportunities in a typical rural economy. In order not to compete with the existing restaurants in the village, the rural hostal only opened an icecream parlour, where apart from the breakfast for overnight guests, daily visitors may experience the delicious ice-cream produced with own farm milk.
