Basic principles of nuts
Uwe Krappitz
The NUTS (Nomenclature of Terretorial Units for Statistics) establishes a common classification of European regions. In its recent revision (Regulation No. 1059/2003) three NUTS levels are defined by a minimum and a maximum number of inhabitants. Additionally, two more “Local administrative units - LAU“ on the communal level try to build up a system for comparison that serves as reference within the EU for:
- collecting, developing and harmonising EU regional statistics
- defining regional sections for economic accounts
- socio-economic analysis of the regions, and for the
- framing of regional policies (objective 1 for NUTS 2).
